ASTRONOMY WORKSHOPS
Saturdays and Sundays
10:00–10:50 a.m. or
11:15 a.m.–12:05 p.m.
Note: Our planetarium can accommodate a maximum of 27 children and adults for planetarium shows.
Flying High
Ages 47
Take an imaginary trip into space in the Holt Planetarium. Start the excursion by learning to identify the Big Dipper and speeding through a whole day in our planetarium “time machine.” Take off with the launch of a spaceship; and learn how things move in space, how astronauts eat food in a weightless environment, and how satellites are put into orbit. Don’t worry, we will return you safely to Earth at the end of this adventure.
Journey to the Moon
Ages 4–7
Pack your astronaut bags with everything you need for an imaginary
trip to the Moon. Start with a time traveler’s view of the changing shapes of the Moon as viewed from Earth. Then land on the Moon and go for an imaginary stroll with lots of “lunatic” excitement and adventure.
Moons of the Solar System
Ages 8 Adult
Explore moons with your hands, eyes, and the “eyes” of space probes.
Learn what causes the phases of the
moon, what causes an eclipse, and what determines how fast a moon orbits. On a make-believe spaceship ride through the Solar System, you will visit the
moons of Mars, Jupiter, and beyond.
Constellations Tonight
Ages 8 Adult
Use a simple star map to find the constellations in the planetarium sky. Keep the map, and practice at home so you can impress your friends and family with your mastery of the night sky.
BIOLOGY
WORKSHOPS
10:0010:50 a.m. or
11:15 a.m.12:05 p.m.
Dino
Defenses
Ages 48
Spikes, shields, horns, claws, sharp teeth, and whipping tails—dinosaurs
had a fascinating assortment of
defenses to protect themselves from
the hungry jaws of predators. Students
watch a drama of a defenseless
dinosaur being pursued by a Tyrannosaurus rex. Each student gets to add imaginative features to a precut, paper, defenseless dinosaur to protect it from T.rex. Children observe and touch animals from the Biology Lab
and see that they have some physical defenses similar to those of the dinosaurs.
Party Animals
Ages 412
Our gentle rabbits, rats, snakes, guinea pigs, lizards, and turtles are featured
in a variety of exciting hands-on activities that you and your friends are
sure to enjoy. Bring the whole gang for some fun or for a unique birthday celebration!
Animal Behavior
Ages 7-12
Your party guests will have a stimulating experience as they experiment
with foods, mirrors, houses, and other stimuli to discover how animals react
to their environments. This workshop is a fun introduction to scientific methods
using the gentle and friendly animals in our Biology Lab.
CHEMISTRY WORKSHOPS
1:15–2:05 p.m. or
2:30–3:20 p.m.
Fizz, Pop, Wow!
Ages 4–7
Mix up some cool concoctions in our Chemistry Lab, and see which ones fizz. Where do the bubbles come from, and what’s inside them? Which ingredients make the bubbliest solutions? Figure out how to use these substances to inflate balloons; and experience the fizzy, foamy action of a chemical reaction.
Slime and Slippery Stuff
Ages 6–10
Is it a solid or a liquid? Measure, mix, and observe as you dissolve solids in liquids to make slippery, bouncy, and see-through concoctions. Take home the results of these experiments, and watch for changes.
Mystery Party
Ages 8–11
Your party guests will arrive with bated breath ready to join in solving a perplexing mystery. They’ll discover secret clues, investigate the motives of cunning suspects, and use scientific techniques to uncover solutions to baffling LHS crimes. Scenarios vary depending on the age of the birthday child.
Winter Wizardry
Ages 7 –12
Discover the secrets of winter frost and cold. Create beautiful “frost” and crystal patterns that won’t melt. Conduct a chemical reaction that turns cold. Experiment with dry ice, and be amazed at what happens when a banana and a balloon are plunged into a liquid that is hundreds of degrees below zero.
November–February
PHYSICS
WORKSHOPS
1:152:05 p.m., or
2:303:20 p.m.
Electrical Connections
Ages 46
Ec-static! is how youll feel at this electrifying party workshop. Find
out what things make the best paths for electricity by using batteries and
light bulbs to complete simple circuits. But beware, a shocking and hair-raising
experience awaits you and your guests.
Volts 'n' Jolts
Ages 7Adult
A shocking and hair-raising experience is in store after you use
coils, magnets, batteries, and solar cells to generate electricity. You will
also see sparks fly with our high-voltage special effects.
