Kevin Beals

Kevin Beals is a curriculum specialist/professional developer and teacher for the Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) Program. He has authored or co-authored the following GEMS curriculum guides: Mystery Festival, Learning About Learning, River Cutters, Messages From Space, Dry Ice Investigations, Environmental Detectives, Ocean Currents, Life Through Time, Living With a Star, Electrical Circuits, and Medical Mystery Festival. He conceptualized and co-designed the ChemMystery exhibit, co-designed three science kits for Scientific Explorer Toy Company, and co-authored three curriculum guides for SETI at NASA. Beals also co-designed 20 LHS school programs, including Ocean Creature Features Festival; Mystery Festival; Environmental Detectives Festival; Medical Mystery Festival; Flames, Flares and Explosions; Crime Camp; Crime-Fighting Superheroes Camp; Fantastic Gas Class; The Science of Toys; and Bones in My Body. Since 1981 he has taught students from preschool to middle school in classroom, museum, and educational camp settings. He has led teacher workshops locally, nationally, and internationally since 1990. He designed and currently co-teaches a UC Berkeley course, Communicating Science, which he is also documenting for publication. Beals has also written and recorded two albums of science education songs with the band The Bungee Jumpin' Cows. He graduated in 1982 with a B.A. from UC Santa Cruz in Environmental Studies/Natural History with a preliminary multiple-subject teaching credential.
