José Franco, EQUALS Director, joined the EQUALS organization in 1991 as coordinator of the National Science Foundationøfunded Matemática Para la Familia program, the Spanish-language outreach of FAMILY MATH. He is Co-Director of the Bridges to Excellence: Achievement in Mathematics (BEAM) project, funded by the California Postsecondary Education Commission and the Department of Education; Director of the English Language Development Institute in Mathematics Content (ELDI-MC); as well as Co-Director of the Family Advocacy in Mathematics Education (FAME) Project funded by Lucent Technologies Foundation. Franco has given numerous presentations on family involvement, equity, teacher leadership, and pedagogy and practice in language acquisition at the local, state, and national level. He has worked closely with other statewide programs to disseminate EQUALS information across the country. For example, he collaborated with the Arkansas Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI) Program and their State Equity Department to develop a model program for teachers working with English language learners, and has conducted related activities in North Dakota and Connecticut. On the international level, Franco worked with both Venezuela and Costa Rica on nationwide projects. He has a B.A. in Elementary Education and a minor in Bilingual Education from Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado. He is also completing his M.A. Program in Mathematics Education with a specialization in middle school mathematics from San Francisco State University. |
