Interpreting Digital
Images (IDI) is part of the Global Systems Science
project's participation in the Digital Library for
Earth Science Education. It is included with every
GSS CD-ROM which you can order
online. IDI consists of a Teacher Guide, a Student
Booklet, and seven software programs. Current versions
of the IDI Teacher Guide and Student Book can be downloaded
from the GSS Download
Site. (This is free, but GSS password is required).
The goal of the IDI unit is to enable
students to understand what they are seeing in Earth
images and analyze them qualitatively and quantitatively
for changes in ecosystems over time, including effects
of urban growth, fires, volcanic eruptions, etc. A
complete set of satellite images accompanies the IDI
unit for exercises, and the software tools can be
used with ANY jpeg image files, so students would
be able to do their own investigations after learning
the basic principles.
