A Day on the Bay: Science Under SailThe Andantino

Spend a luxurious day for two exploring the San Francisco Bay on the 1982 classic sloop Andantino. Andantino is a Tartan 33 fractional rigged sloop designed by Olin Stephens, the foremost naval architect of the 20th century, designer of six America’s Cup winning yachts. Sail the boat, trim the sails, or just sit back and relax in the company of a scientist skipper; a first mate; and marine biologist Craig Strang, Associate Director of Lawrence Hall of Science and leader of the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence—California (COSEE CA). Craig is the founding Director of MARE: Marine Activities, Resources & Education, a K–8 interdisciplinary education program that is designed to immerse the entire school in the study of the ocean. Named Marine Educator of the Year in 2005, Strang is the author of three sets of science and environmental education curriculum materials and co-author of three LHS Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) teacher guides. Strang has conducted field research on elephant seals and humpback whales, and occasionally leads eco-tours to Baja, California and the Galapagos.

Plan your tour of the Bay and gourmet lunch with the skipper and Craig for summer or fall 2008; excluded dates are 9/22–10/27. From the home port of Alameda, you can cruise during the day or at sunset on this 34-foot beauty by the Oakland Estuary, Treasure Island, Angel Island, Golden Gate, Alcatraz, and other San Francisco destinations! Date to be mutually agreed upon by all parties.
